Joseph Haydn composed his Symphony no. 34 (listed as I 34 in the Hoboken catalogue) in 1765. It is a work in four movements, molded after the then-archaic Sonata da Chiesa pattern of slow-quick-slow (minuet)-quick. It is also an homotonal work (the first movement is in D minor and tremaining in D major). It is scored for two oboes, bassoon, two horns, strings and continuo. It has been suggested that this symphony is the companion work of the author's own Symphony no. 49, as there's an inscription accompanying Symphony no. 49 that reads ''This symphony serves as a companion to the English Philosopher(...)''. Symphony no. 34 shares the exact same movement plan, and there's thematic similarity between the two pieces.
