James Lyon was een operacomponist wat muziek betreft, vrijwel geheel autodidact (hij ging echter naar Oxford en werd in 1905 Mus Doc van die universiteit). Zelf gaf hij later les aan Bantock's Birmingham and Midland Institute en ook aan St Michael's College Tenbury, King Edward's School, Warwick en Trinity College London. Hij onderzocht en oordeelde op grote schaal. Hij schreef twee boeken voor studenten: A Practical Guide to the Modern Orchestra (Musicians' Library, 1912) en The Elements of Harmony (Banks 1920). Hij stierf in Australië op 25 augustus 1949
