Frederic Chopin wrote the Nocturnes, Op. 27 in 1836, and published them in 1837 with dedication to the Countess d'Appony. This publication was the first in which Chopin released nocturnes in pairs instead of triplets. The pieces have been described as 'ballades in miniature', establishing a new landmark in the genre of the nocture, now unrecognizable from the nocturnes of John Field.
