Napisał wiele znanych hymnów, w tym „Almost Persuaded”, „Allelujah, What a Saviour!”, „Let the Lower Lights Be Burning”, „Wonderful Words of Life” i melodię do „It Is Well with My Soul” Horatio Spafforda.
