Jean-Baptiste Davaux was a French composer. A composer and violinist in Paris from c 1767, he held various government posts. He had two comic operas staged (1785) but was best known for his instrumental music, especially his 13 symphonies concertantes (c 1772-1800). He also wrote 25 string, quartets, other chamber works, symphonies, violin concertos and ariettes, in a simple, tuneful style. He invented a chronomètre, by 1784 - well before Maelzel's metronome.
