Charles Joseph Van Helmont, citizen of Brussels is a composer, harpsichordist and organist Belgian born in Brussels. He was the first student of Hercules Brehy-Pierre (1673-1737) in the collegiate church of Sainte-Gudule. At the age of eighteen Charles-Joseph van Helmont followed lessons from the organist Josse Boutmy. After beginning his career in 1737 as music director of the Notre-Dame's Chapel and the Royal Chapel, he became organist and choirmaster of St. Gudule collegiate in 1741 where for thirty six years he took care of the sacred choirs and concerts.
