Bart Verhallen studied at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. After this he was orchestral musician. In 1896 he became conductor of the Militia chapel in The Hague. Also in Schiedam, he was conductor of the militia chapel and an honorary member of the Royal Schiedams male "Orpheus". As a composer, he wrote mainly marches and dances for orchestra and brass. In the district of Groenoord Schiedam is a place named after him Bart Verhallen Square.
