Martha, oder Der Markt zu Richmond (Martha, or The Market at Richmond) is the title of a romantic comic opera in four acts, compsoed by Friedrich von Flotow. The German libretto was written by Friedrich Wilhelm Riese, based on a story by Jules-Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges. The opera was itself an adaptation of an earlier work by Flotow, who in 1844 contributed the first act of the ballet Harriette, ou la servante de Greenwiche (also inspired in a text by Saint-Georges) for the ballerina Adèle Dumilâtre. 'Martha' was premiered on September 25th, 1847 in Vienna, and the score was published that same year.
