Emmanuel Chabrier composed and published the Habanera in 1888. The piece was conceived for piano, and the popular orchestral arrangement (transposed to the key of D) was not published until a year later. This piece is another example of the attraction that the French composers felt towards Spanish-like pieces during the late 19th century and the beginning of the 20th.
