Nouvel Age Partitions
New Age is a genre associated with the broader New Age spiritual movement. It is most commonly conceived and marketed as an aid for relaxation and mediation. In musical terms, New Age music draws influences from many sources, and can in fact be divided in several subgenres: being a mostly commercial label, the term 'New Age music' can be applied to very different musical expressions which serve the purposes of the movement. Still, most music associated with New Age relies on simple, sometimes notoriously modal harmonies, low chronometric density, and easy melodies, usually treated in the form of theme and variations.
Instrumentation of New Age music can be entirely acoustic (in which case it is common to hear acoustic and Spanish guitars, violins, flutes, pianos, etc.) or make use of synthesizers. Where electronic elements are introduced, the most common are subtle drum machines, sustained synth pads, drones, nature sounds, etc. Human voices may or may not be used, but when they do appear it is not uncommon to hear strong non-academic influences in them, such as Tibetan/Native American/Celtic-like chants, lyrics in eastern languages, etc.
