Schubert wrote his String quartet no. 13 in A minor, catalogued as D. 804 or Op. 29, and often nicknamed Rosamunde, in 1824. This work appeared roughly at the same time as his Death and the Maiden quartet, after some years during which he hadn't approached the genre. From 1824 onwards, Schubert largely turned away from working on songs in order to concentrate on chamber music: his works from this period rely on the cyclical use of elements, and the A minor quartet is not the exception. The work was premiered in 1824. It consists of four movements and takes around 30 minutes to be performed.
