  • Birthplace: England

William Whytbroke was an english composer. He may have been the ‘Whitbroke’ who was chaplain of Cardinal College, Oxford, in 1529-30 and later (1531-5) at St Paul's Cathedral, London. His music is in the florid pre-Reformation style, essentially non-imitative and with long, ornate phrases. His large-scale Mass Apon the Squarefeatures vigorous writing and phrases of cantus firmi moving freely from voice to voice. He also wrote a votive antiphon, a four-voice In Nomine and two English pieces dating from the reign of Edward VI.
