Justin Élie was an haitian composer and pianist Elie took piano lessons between 1889-1894 with Ermine Faubert and studied for a short time, in the Institute of Saint Louis de Gonzague in Port-au-Prince. In 1895 he moved to Paris and attended the Cours Masset, preparatory school for the Conservatoire de Paris. There he studied from 1901 to 1905 piano with Antoine François Marmontel and Charles Wilfred Bériot and harmony with Émile Pessard. He studied composition with Paul Vidal. After his return to Haiti, he appeared as a concert pianist and worked Ludovic Lamothe. On a concert tour 1909-10 he visited Jamaica, Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, Curacao, Venezuela and Cuba. 1921 Elie emigrated to the United States. Here many of his works were published by Carl Fischer Music, Inc.. In 1931 he headed in the National Broadcasting Company a weekly radio show, The Lure of the Tropics.
