Agustín Pío Barrios (also known as Agustín Barrios Mangoré), was a Paraguayan classical guitarist and composer, best known for his 1921 magnum opus piece 'La Catedral'. He was born in San Juan Bautista de las Misiones, and at age 15 he moved to Asunción to attend college with a scholarship in music, thus becoming one of the youngest university students in Paraguayan histor. He spoke Spanish, Guaraní and read English, French and German. Barrios dedicated his life to music and poetry, having composed more than 300 songs. He was famed for his phenomenal performances, both on gramophone recordings and live, where he would perform in traditional Paraguayan dress, under the pseudonym of Nitsuga Mangoré. His works bear a heavy south american folk music influence, and were largely late-Romantic in character, despite his having lived well into the twentieth century.
