Friendly and Fun Professional Piano Instruction

I began teaching piano on a professional level in 1986 shortly after becoming aware of the Utah Music Teachers Association (UMTA). I am a member of three local chapters and over the years have served in these chapters in a variety of positions, some of which include: Membership Chair, Teacher Referrals Chair, Recital and Ensemble Chair, Recital Committee member, Newsletter Chair and Secretary. Currently, I am serving the Sandy Utah Music Teachers Association as President, a two-year position. I currently serve as the Festivals Chairman for the “Sandy A” Area of the Utah Federation of Music Clubs (UFMC) affiliated withe the National Federation of Music Clubs (NFMC).

I have presented workshops for the Sandy Chapter, Jordan River Chapter as well as Salt Lake Music Associations on motivational ideas for teachers in the summertime, appropriate games, and shared my favorite books to further piano teacher education. Other serving opportunities included being a teacher panel member discussing technique, theory, pedagogy, and recitals.

I offer a mentoring program for high school and college students who are currently taking lessons from me or another piano teacher, as I feel this area is sadly neglected. Several of my students have gone on to profession pedagogical studies, joined professional music organizations, and are now successfully teaching students of their own.

As part of the local music teachers associations, my students and I have participated the last 20 years in monster concerts/ensemble recitals i.e. benefit concerts. Through the Sandy UMTA, I was able to organize and participate in large-scale benefit programs in one of the local malls involving six to eight pianos for cystic fibrosis, leukemia and muscular dystrophy. My music students were able to raise significant amounts of money for these causes with their music. In 2000 we received a grant from the MTNA for our community effort.

I enjoy judging music competitions for our local community school district for the Reflections Contest. I also volunteer in local schools teaching music theory, and I offer my services at the high school music events during the year.
