Ludwig van Beethoven wrote his Piano Sonata no. 9 in E, Op. 14 no. 1 in 1798 and dedicated it to Baroness Josefa von Braun (also the dedicatee of the no. 2 sonata in the Op. 14 set). Although seemingly simplistic in nature, and counted among his early works, this piece introduced manyt novel composition techniques, adding a Sturm und Drang edge to the work that would later develop into Beethoven's signature style. The sonata was arranged for string quartet in 1801 and transposed, to this effect, to the more comfortable key of F major.
