Franz Liszt wrote Die Loreley, S. 273 in 1841 and published in two years later, with dedication to Countess Marie d'Agoult. One of his very first songs, it is based on German text by Heinrich Heine (1797–1856). The original version is catalogued as either S. 273/1 or, less commonly, as LW.N5/1. The 1854 revision, published in 1856, is listed as either S.273/2 or LW.N5/2. In 1843 Lizst wrote a piano solo version, published in 1844. In 1860 a version for orchestra was made, published in 1862. In 1861 the piano arrangement was revised for the last time, now named S. 532 and published in 1862.
