Paul Dukas wrote The Sorcerer's Apprentice (L'apprenti sorcier) in 1897, based on Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's 1797 poem of the same name. It has since become Dukas' most popular piece, with its inclusion in Disney's 1940 film Fantasia bringing it from the concert hall to massive audiences.
