Vom Himmel hoch, da komm ich her is a Christmas piece written by Martin Luther in the 1530s. The song was written to fit in a nativity play, opening with a child dressed like an angel sings the first verses, and finally the entire family or denomination singing the rest of the verses. Pachelbel created this choral prelude using Vom himmel hoch as a cantus firmus in the pedal.
