Sergei Rachmaninogg composed his Piano Sonata no. 2 in B flat minor, Op. 36, in 1913. He started working on it on Rome and finished it in his Ivanovka country estate. It was first performed in St. Petersburg. Rachmaninoff revised the sonata in 1931, with the note, "the new version, revised and reduced by author."
