Homer Newton Bartlett A New England native, Homer Newton Bartlett began his musical studies in childhood. In 1864, at the age of 18, he enlisted in the army, though no one is sure if he ever saw combat. His adult life was spent in New York City, as the organist and musical director of several churches.
