Edmond-Nathan Yafil was born in Algiers in 1874, Yafil began, as all the musicians of his time, by attending the Moorish café in the Casbah of Algiers old; places where perpetuated the tradition of San'a music; also referred to Andalusian music. There he came to listen to the last great Muslim Master of the 19th century, the Me alem [Training leader] Mohammed Ben Ali Sfindja, who died in 1908. The latter will take in its troop count renowned musicians: During the Me alem Saul, aka Mouzino (died 1932), Laho Serror, Saidi, etc.
