Clarence S. Wallace was the son of the composer of Maritana, William Vincent Wallace. An amateur composer, Clarence Wallace was well known as a sportsman and was a pioneer of polo in the USA. He died at Aiken, South Carolina, where he had been largely responsible for that town's development as a winter resort for the super rich.
