Liszt Nuages gris, S. 199

Franz Liszt composed the single-movement Nuages Gris (French for 'Grey Clouds'), also known as Trübe Wolken, in 1881. In his later years Liszt departed from his purely virtuoso style and composed several pieces that may be described as 'experimental'. Nuages Gris is one of these: a quite short and technically simple piece with a performance time of only 3 minutes, which conveys a very particular mood. It was only in the second half of the 20th century that Liszt late works began to be appreciated. Nuages gris was published only in 1927, and it is usually listed by its Searle catalogue number, S. 199.
